About the Ensemble

Our
Story

A pioneering collaboration between Albanian and American performers, united by artistic excellence, shared heritage, and mutual respect.

Bridging Past
and Present

Queen Teuta Quartet was born from a profound belief: that music is the most direct bridge between cultures, generations, and identities. Named in honor of Queen Teuta of Illyria — one of antiquity's most powerful and defiant rulers — the ensemble carries forward a legacy of strength, independence, and cultural pride.

Through inventive arrangements by Music Director Edmond Xhani and original compositions by ensemble members, the quartet breathes new life into Albanian folk and art music. Every performance is an act of cultural memory — honoring what has been passed down while reimagining it for new ears and new places.

The ensemble's founding brought together four extraordinary string players, enriched by special guest artists on percussion, clarinet, and flute — expanding its palette into a vibrant chamber collective that moves seamlessly between intimacy and grandeur.

Today, Queen Teuta Quartet stands at the intersection of diaspora and homeland, tradition and reinvention — a sound that is unmistakably Albanian, and unmistakably of the world.

The Pillars
of Our Work

Everything we create is rooted in four core commitments — to heritage, collaboration, artistry, and community. These are not abstract ideals; they shape every arrangement, every rehearsal, every performance.

01

Heritage

Albanian music carries centuries of history — folk songs, court music, regional dialects of rhythm and melody. We treat this inheritance with reverence and scholarly care, presenting it with full depth and context.

02

Dialogue

Music only lives when it speaks to other music. Our arrangements invite Albanian tradition into conversation with classical chamber forms, world music, and the contemporary cultural moment.

03

Excellence

Our ensemble draws from the highest tier of performers — Carnegie Hall, Broadway, the Silk Road Ensemble, the Juilliard School. This standard of artistry elevates every piece we present.

04

Diaspora

For Albanians far from home, our music is a connection to roots. For audiences encountering this tradition for the first time, it is an invitation to discover something profound and entirely new.

05

Community

Art is a collective act. We build bridges — between Albanian and American artists, between classical and folk traditions, between generations — creating something none of us could create alone.

06

Reinvention

Tradition is not a museum. It is a living language. We honor the past by allowing it to grow, surprise, and speak in unexpected ways — always in service of the music's original spirit.

Queen Teuta
of Illyria

Teuta was Queen of the Ardiaei tribe and ruler of the Illyrian kingdom, reigning from approximately 231–228 BC. She commanded a powerful maritime force and defied the Roman Republic at a time when no ruler dared challenge its authority — becoming one of antiquity's most formidable leaders.

For Albanians, Teuta is more than a historical figure. She is a symbol of national identity, sovereignty, and the enduring strength of the Illyrian heritage from which the Albanian people descend. Her name carries the weight of centuries of pride.

In naming the quartet after her, the ensemble honors not just a queen, but an entire people's determination to preserve its culture, its language, and its music — no matter how far from home they find themselves.
